Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Eastern and South-East England
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for severe thunderstorms across parts of eastern and south-eastern England, in effect from 20:00 BST Friday to 05:00 Saturday. The warning zone spans from Eastbourne, Sussex, to Cromer, Norfolk, with risks of:
Flash flooding (30-50mm of rain expected)
Power cuts and travel disruptions (train/bus cancellations likely)
Dangerous road conditions (40-50mph winds, fast-flowing floodwater)
Record Heat Fuels Storms
Friday could become 2025’s hottest day, with temperatures potentially hitting 30°C (86°F) near Norwich—surpassing the previous high of 29.3°C in London on 1 May. The heat and humidity will trigger intense thunderstorms, ending the hot spell by Saturday.
Safety Advice
Avoid travel during the storm.
Stay indoors and check on vulnerable neighbours.
Never drive through floodwater—just 30cm can sweep away cars.
Extended Warnings
Yellow thunderstorm alerts for south-west England, Wales, and Scotland (Friday–Saturday).
Saturday’s forecast: Cooler (highs of low 20s°C) but unsettled.
