South Africa Breaks 27-Year ICC Trophy Drought with Thrilling WTC Final Win Over Australia

Aiden Markram's Heroic 136 Ends Australia's Unbeaten Final Streak

In a historic victory at Lord's on Saturday (June 14), South Africa clinched the World Test Championship (WTC) Final**, defeating Australia by five wickets to end a 27-year ICC trophy drought. Aiden Markram’s magnificent 136-run knock anchored the chase, overcoming a fierce Australian pace attack featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins—previously unbeaten in ICC finals—to break their remarkable streak.

South Africa's Steady Chase Seals the Win

Resuming the penultimate day needing 69 more runs, the Proteas maintained a cautious but determined approach. Markram, resuming his overnight innings, played a composed knock despite losing partners at the other end.

Australia struck early when Pat Cummins removed Temba Bavuma (66), ending his gritty 147-run partnership with Markram. Bavuma, battling a hamstring niggle, received a standing ovation from the Lord’s crowd for his resilient performance.

Australia’s Desperate Reviews Fall Short

Desperate to stay alive, Australia burned both remaining DRS reviews in quick succession—first on a caught-behind appeal against Tristan Stubbs, and then on an LBW shout against David Bedingham. Mitchell Starc eventually dismissed Stubbs with a brilliant delivery, but South Africa inched closer.

Markram brought up South Africa’s 250 before Bedingham reduced the target to under 20. Australia took the new ball* but Markram welcomed Hazlewood with a boundary before falling to a sharp catch by Travis Head. His match-winning 136 earned him a standing ovation.

Dramatic Finish as South Africa Ends ICC Jinx

The final runs came in dramatic fashion, with Kyle Verreynne surviving a close caught-behind appeal before sealing the win, ending South Africa’s long wait for an ICC title.

Brief Scores:

- Australia: 212 (Beau Webster 72, Steven Smith 66; Kagiso Rabada 5-51) & 206 (Mitchell Starc 58*; Rabada 4-59)

-South Africa: 138 (David Bedingham 45; Cummins 6-28) & 282/5 (Markram 136, Bavuma 66; Starc 3-66)
